Allergy
Treatment
Even the most diligent allergy sufferer will
not be able to prevent all allergic substances from entering
their world. However, even if having taken all the precautions,
you suffer from an allergic attack, allergy medicine is
available.
Allergy medicines are of the most benefit if
you use them prior to being exposed to allergens.
Antihistamines are known to counter many
allergic responses such as, sneezing, runny noses, and many
others.
Decongestant allergy medicines relieve blocked
up noses, and may deter sore throats.
Nasal steroid sprays are allergy medicines to
assist with inhaled allergens.
Romolyn sodium, is another allergy medicine and
is helpful as a nasal spray.
Eye drops, which may not be a true allergy
medicine, may assist with eye sensitivity from an allergic
response.
Allergy
Causes
An allergy is a response by the body’s immune
system, caused for example, by some environmental substance, or
by the foods that we eat, usually protein, that are
collectively known as allergens.
The first time an allergic person is exposed to
an allergen the symptoms may not occur. What happens is that
your immune system mistakenly considers allergens, that would
not normally be thought of as harmful, to be invaders that seek
to damage the body. That triggers the immune system to produce
antibodies to overcome the attack. Antibodies produced in this
way are known as IgE, or immunoglobulin E.
If, and when, you are again exposed to a
similar allergen, your immune system will automatically mass
produce IgE antibodies and direct them to neutralize the
allergens. When the antibodies bind with the allergens, they
circulate round the body, and encounter specific types of cell
known as mast and basil cells. These cells contain chemical
substances, including histamine, that are major causes of
inflammation.
The IgE antibodies with the allergens attached
to them, bind with the mast and basil cells, changing their
cell membranes, which causes the substances inside to leak out
into surrounding tissue. The resultant inflammation is a common
symptom of allergy. Allergies vary from person to person. Some
suffer because of allergen, in their food, whilst the air they
breathe is the culprit for others, and some, more unfortunate
people, may suffer from multiple allergies.
Allergy
Symptoms
Regardless of the sort of allergy you may have,
the symptoms are frequently similar, and include:
Sneezing
Nasal congestion
Eyes watering
Runny nose
Ear discomfort
Bags under the eyes
Hives
Rashes
Breathing difficulties
Anaphylaxis (May in extreme cases prove to be fatal)
The old adage, that prevention is better than
cure, is much the case with allergy. If you know that you are
allergic to a particular substance, it is sensible to do all
you can to avoid it. For example, if you are allergic to dust
mites, you should keep your house as clean as possible. There
are air filters that you can buy to assist the process, and if
you are able to create a dust free environment you might
consider working from home, if that is feasible.
If you are aware that you are allergic to a
specific food, it should be totally eliminated from your diet.
If that results in other problems, such as vitamin deficiency,
suitable supplements are available
Although you may not be able to totally
eliminate allergy symptoms, with due care and attention, you
may decrease their frequency and severity.
