Allergy and
Sinusitis
Allergy and sinusitis are not the same, but as the symptoms
may be similar, the same treatments are sometimes recommended.
However, when an allergy is diagnosed it may be possible to
avoid those places where the triggers, (allergens), are to be
found, or reduce allergens such as house dust, by installation
of filters, the use of special vacuum devices and other
methods. Sinusitis is a bacteriological disorder, but an
allergic reaction may leave the nasal passages more susceptible
to bacteriological attack.
Many people who suffer from sinusitis, have said that the
affliction is more than just a pain in the nose. As well as
hurting, it depletes your energy, causes sleeplessness, and may
even interfere with your thought processes. It can result in
halitosis, and make you hoarse. Sometimes it seems as if there
is no relief. Sufferers need to know exactly what sinusitis is,
and how it relates to allergy. Only then will they know what to
do to obtain relief.
Define
Allergy
Allergies are the outcome of hypersensitive immune systems.
If a foreign substance enters the body, the immune system
reacts as though it is harmful and produces antibodies. Then if
a similar substance were to enter the body it would have a
means of protection. The trouble with an allergic reaction is
that the immune system produces antibodies that far exceed
requirements. So, the body reacts with the symptoms of allergy,
such as respiratory swelling, rashes, itching, breathing
difficulties, nasal congestion and even fatal anaphylaxis.
Define
Sinusitis
The term sinusitis is really self-explanatory, meaning
inflammation of the sinuses. The sinuses are the hollow
pathways, located under the bridge of the nose, through which
air passes as you breathe. A bacterial attack can cause the
sinuses to become infected, resulting in inflammation that may
last from just a few days, to several months.
If sinusitis becomes prolonged, it is considered to be
chronic, a condition that frequently arises after colds and
flu, or an allergy attack. The sinus membranes become inflamed,
and drainage becomes a problem, as mucus collects and blocks
the passages, creating good breeding grounds for bacteria.
Symptoms of Allergy and Sinusitis
Symptoms of allergy and sinusitis may be similar. Therefore
diagnosis of either condition is not straightforward. However,
facial pressure and pain, and thick discharges of green or
yellow mucus, rather than clear whitish mucus frequently
accompanies sinusitis. There may also be a tendency at night to
drip from the nose, possibly causing a sore throat. Chronic
sinusitis is inclined to last longer than allergic reactions.
Check with your doctor or ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) expert for
further information.
Treatment for Allergy and
Sinusitis
As sinusitis and allergy have similar symptoms, the same
treatment can be used for both. Relief may be obtained by
tackling the symptoms rather than the condition itself. There
is a choice of products that offer relief, including:
Nasal -
Sinus Irrigation Procedures
If you are seeking therapeutic assistance for allergy and
sinus relief you could try nasal/sinus irrigation systems. They
are drug free devices, and are formulated to soothe and relieve
symptoms caused by allergies and sinus infections. These
devices help to reduce:
Nasal dripping
Inflamed nasal passages
Headaches
Congestion
Coughs
Sinus
Nasal Sprays
You will have noticed that it can be difficult to breathe
when smitten with sinusitis or an allergy. Nasal sprays are
designed to approximate the body’s natural salinity and
electrolyte composition so they are good products to provide
relief from breathing difficulties.
