Food Allergies - Food Allergy
Symptoms
Food allergies occur when the body’s immune
system overreacts to a food, mistakenly perceived to be harmful,
by producing large amounts of antibodies. Then the next time a
similar food is ingested, the antibodies provoke an allergic
reaction, and you suffer from a food allergy symptom.
There are millions of Americans who suffer from
food allergy symptoms, ranging from relatively mild to very
severe. They include breathing difficulties, drop in blood
pressure, vomiting, swelling of the tongue and throat, hives,
diarrhea, and many others. An allergy symptom known as
anaphylaxis is a potentially dangerous condition that
occasionally proves to be fatal, if not dealt with as an
emergency.
Preventative
Measures
The best way to avoid food allergy symptoms is
to eliminate the foods, known as allergens that trigger your
allergic reactions. You will need to closely scrutinize food
labels, to be absolutely sure that the ingredients will not
induce any food allergies you are susceptible to. For instance,
nuts and particularly peanuts, are responsible for food allergy
symptoms in many people. They are sometimes used, in one form
or another, in food products that you would not normally expect
to find them in. Very small quantities of the suspect food, are
required to trigger an allergic reaction, that could
incapacitate you.
Reputable food manufacturers and processors
understand the health problems associated with food allergy
symptoms, and will do their utmost to ensure that food labels
accurately reflect the contents of their packages.
Unfortunately, there have been cases, where food allergies have
resulted from products, when some sort of cross contamination
has occurred. Such instances are rare, but if you hear about
any products that have been suspect, note the manufacturer, and
leave them alone, so as not to jeopardize your health.
As yet, there are no medicines that completely
cure food allergies. Adrenaline is the medication frequently
used to deal with severe food allergy symptoms. It is worth
reiterating, that the best way to overcome food allergies, is
to completely avoid foods that you know you are allergic to. If
you read any food labels that you cannot totally understand,
leave that particular variety alone and choose an
alternative.
Food Allergies
Diary
It is recommended that you keep a food
allergies diary, so that you have a source of information about
food allergies that is regularly updated. You could include
information about the food allergies you are susceptible to,
when they first started, when you experienced your last attack,
and which specific foods you know you must absolutely avoid. It
is in your own best interests to be vigilant, and to know as
much about food allergies as possible, so that you fully
understand your own condition. If you carry your food allergies
diary with you, wherever you go, it will be available if you
experience a serious allergic reaction, whilst away from home
or other familiar territory.
Be aware that you are the person with the best
knowledge regarding your own food allergies, and that if you
keep a brief, but pertinent record with you at all times it
could be invaluable in an emergency. This is not scare
mongering, but it is common sense to look after yourself, and
help others to do so should the need arise.
Remember that unique as you are as a person,
you are not unique as a sufferer of food allergies. In fact
they are all too common, but one benefit arising from that is,
it could help others to help you.
