Allergy - Cat
Allergies
If you are allergic to cats, then don’t keep
cats! Obvious isn’t it, but what if you are a cat lover and
would rather die than surrender your pet? The good news is that
there is no need to die, because cat allergies are generally
manageable.
The cat allergens responsible for cat allergies
are small enough to be termed microscopic. Because of this they
stay suspended in the air longer than larger allergens, such as
pollens, and remain available to penetrate your nasal
airways.
Cats are frequently given the run of the house,
and move about according to their whims, and carry their animal
dander, responsible for cat allergies from room to room. They
shed the dander as they wander about so it may be pretty well
dispersed throughout the home.
There are ways and means of limiting the effect
of allergens in your home.
Whose Been Sleeping In
My Bed?
Is it really necessary to have your cat, dear
as he/she is, sleeping on your bed? If you suffer from cat
allergies this should be a no, NO! Does your cat really think
more of you when you are wheezing, sneezing, or itching, and
not otherwise feeling at your best? Probably not, because when
you are incapacitated you will have less time for him/her. So,
in the interests of a harmonious relationship, make your cat
comfortable in its own bed.
Now go one further.
Place Your Bedroom Out
Of Bounds
Much of the time you spend in your bedroom you
are asleep. If your cat is similarly asleep in his/her own
comfortable surroundings, you will not miss each other too much
during the night. If you fit an air purifier or air
conditioner, and keep the bedroom door closed at all times, you
will create something of a sanctuary, away from cat
allergies.
If you suffer from other allergies, as well as
cat allergies, you can take further steps to make the bedroom
as allergen free as possible. It will become a place where you
can get away from it all. Less of a sanctuary and more of a
haven!
Rest Of The
House
Even after creating a special room you will
want to keep the rest of your house as clean as possible, to
keep cat allergies in check. Make a point of washing anything,
in which allergens might collect, in a 1400 hot water. This
might include, cushion covers, furniture covers, and some
curtains, although fitted blinds could be a better alternative.
You will also want to wash the bedding, from your special room
separately, but in similarly hot water.
HEPA Air
Filters
Ordinary air filters may not be effective for
microscopic particles such as cat dander, HEPA (High Efficiency
Particle Air) filters, are reputed to filter out 99.9% of
airborne contaminants. Therefore, they can help to minimise the
risk of cat allergies. You could begin by using these special
filters in one room, and then extend them, as you consider
necessary.
Vacuum
Cleaning
Cat allergens stick to walls, furniture,
chairs, carpets, and the like, and they need to be carefully
removed, to help keep cat allergies at bay. Special vacuum
cleaners are available, with high-grade hypoallergenic bags, to
prevent the contents escaping and exacerbating the problem.
With thoughtful planning, you can manage cat
dander and other allergens, and coexist with your loving
feline.
