Acupuncture for
Allergies, Psoriasis, Acne
Even though acupuncture did not become popular
in the West until the 20th century, its oriental history spans
thousands of years. It is now considered to be a safe and
effective therapy, for numerous conditions, including
allergy.
Acupuncture for psoriasis acne, allergies, and
similar disorders is being studied by several groups, seeking
to examine and quantify initial studies, on the effects of
acupuncture as a treatment for such conditions. The first study
concerning acupuncture for psoriasis, acne, and allergies, took
place during 1992, and examined acupuncture as a treatment for
skin allergies.
The limited study, that took place in China,
took 61 patients considered to be resistant to other therapies
and introduced acupuncture as an alternative, with an average
of nine sessions for each patient. Supporters of the study
believed that acupuncture produced excellent results. More than
50%, of those treated with acupuncture for psoriasis, acne, and
allergies, achieved total healings and remissions, and they
nearly all benefited to some extent.
In acupuncture, the body’s energy pathways,
known as meridians, are used to restore balanced energy flow.
Through stimulation of the meridians the acupuncturist will
clear blockages from the pathways, that could otherwise lead to
disorders, such as psoriasis, acne, and allergies.
A separate study in Russia, using acupuncture
for psoriasis, acne, allergies, and similar disorders,
demonstrated good results, in that 20% of patients treated with
acupuncture for these conditions, and other problems,
experienced remissions. Moreover, in about 50% of the patients,
the symptoms of psoriasis had considerably improved.
Additional studies have been carried out in the
West, but with mixed results. So far, there has been no
specific evidence showing that acupuncture for psoriasis, acne,
allergies, and other skin disorders is effective, but
individual cases have shown improvement. There are some
psoriasis and acne patients who stated, that after undergoing a
series of acupuncture sessions, their symptoms were much
improved.
Common
Factor
Psoriasis and acne are different conditions,
but as disorders with their own symptoms and histories, that
are not allergic in origin, both are affected by moods. As a
result of this, tension and depression, tend to worsen the
situation. This is the common factor between psoriasis, acne,
allergies and other skin disorders, and serves to explain why
the same therapy can benefit them all.
Acupuncture is not traditionally recommended
for mood disorders. However, partly because of the findings of
previous studies, for psoriasis, acne, allergies, and other
ailments, the therapy’s usage has continued to grow. Depression
and stress are increasingly common and lead to many related
disorders, including allergies, with skin allergies becoming
most prominent. If further studies show that acupuncture is
effective in relieving psoriasis, acne, and allergies, it could
be related to them being stress based disorders.
Acupuncture for psoriasis, acne, allergies, and
other stress-based conditions is an intriguing concept that
could benefit from further research, particularly as drug based
treatments for such ailments may have significant side
effects.
Considering allergies in total, food allergy is one of the
most common, and about 11 million people in the USA are

Just to confuse matters further, gluten has been connected
with disorders other than gluten allergy. It has been
blamed for intolerance, including wheat intolerance, and
coeliac disease.
